Here are some pictures of battery installations on the Washington coast, at the mouth of the Columbia River from WWII. Cape Disappointment State Park (formally Fort Canby) is a nice place to stay in exploring the two lighthouses: Cape Disappointment and North Head, the Lewis and Clark Interpretative Center and seven miles of the paved Discovery Trail along the southern section of Long Beach Peninsula.
The Lewis and Clark Interpretative Center is located at these battery installations, offering a great view of the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse and the rugged mouth of the Columbia River. You can take the trail to this light house from the Interpretative Center/battery. It has been several years since our last visit to this light house, and we did not recognize this new configuration, which nicely highlights the Interpretative Center. There is plenty of parking, with a short walk up to the Center. We did not take the walk to the light house this time.
We did visit North Head Lighthouse on our stay here last year, and we had a good view of it from the beach. Rupert loved the beach, in that it gave him plenty of room to chase his ball...! He cared little about the waves, the birds, the smells....just his ball! Note that he made a unique pattern in the sand--always turning to the right, and digging out throwing sand in a "v" shape.
Although we are experiencing more rain than usual this visit in the Pacific Northwest, we did have a couple of nice days where we were able to ride our bikes on the Discovery Trail, drive and walk on the beach.
