Out our Window, Part IV

Image
At North Ranch - 77 degrees, partly cloudy High 77   Low  60 Have we mentioned the fact that we seem to be attracting storms on our journeys this summer...? This is what we saw out our window in Winnemmuca, NV. New Frontier RV Park Clouds were with us down to Ely, providing excellent opportunities for pictures and lower temperatures but no rain! Sunrise at Ely KOA   While in Las Vegas, apparently we did bring rain--some major flooding to parts of the city north of us--but we managed to escape with nothing but showers over us. Sunrise at Oasis Las Vegas RV Resort By the time we got to Prescott Valley, then finally, North Ranch, old Mr. Sun was pushing the thermometer up into the mid 90's and we were able to test the effectiveness and efficiency of the three AC units in our new coach. They work very well! We really only need two! Yea! We did have about five days at North Ranch with temperatures in the mid 90's, then our storm attraction kicked in, and we e

Currently at Oasis Las Vegas RV Resort  58 degrees High  74   Low 60   Partly Cloudy (translation--MOSTLY SUNNY, compared to Oregon Coast use!) Data has refreshed! Lindy has learned a very valuable lesson regarding settings on using Netflex, to conserve data usage....we hope! While at Bend-Sisters Garden RV Resort we saw the Lunar Eclipse. And, NO RAIN! Lunar Eclipse  Moving on down the road we stayed a couple of nights at one of our favorite spots, Burns RV Park. We love small towns, and Burns RV Park, Burns, OR Burns, Oregon fits the bill nicely. This RV park is nicely maintained, the sites are long and wide, and come with cable TV, although they do have sites which are satellite friendly, which we requested.  We always enjoy our time in this part of Oregon! And look, NO RAIN! Burns RV Park, Burns, OR Burns RV Park, Burns, OR We found a new park in Winnamucca on Allstays (an excellent app for tablets and I Pad users!), New Frontier RV Park. Roads are paved

Currently in Burns, OR   80 degrees High  82    Low 36 On our way south...enjoying the coolness while we have it! Blog updates have been limited by Lindy's lesson learned the hard way regarding Netflex settings and some of our new equipment--enabling streaming through the Blu-Ray player....More on that later (when data refreshes!). Meanwhile, enjoy these shots out our window in Valley Camp, Washington and on the Oregon Coast in Lincoln City. Elk return after most of the RVers depart!  Septmeber 2015 Young Spike Elk, grazing under one of our slides! September 2015 Valley Camp, September --Notice the dry spots! On to Lincoln City.... Lincoln City, the Ocean! Lincoln City, the ocean, really!  The Riders are alive and well, continuing to enjoy our travels. Later! Roving Riders SWIRVIN on down the road into Nevada.

Out Our Window....

Currently in East Glacier KOA  84 degrees (feels like 82!) High  85   Low 56   Partly Cloudy--VERY Smokey! Our last post described the slackening of the Reynolds Creek Fire along St. Mary Lake in East Glacier. We had a few very nice days of no smoke and glorious weather, even if we had to have some heat in the mornings! We are introducing a new "series" of posts describing what we see out of our window, for as we travel, we are constantly changing our "yard".  We will share these views with you! So, here we go--the last post ended with this shot out our window: (remember, click on the picture to make it larger) Monday morning, about 10 AM This is what we are seeing out our window now. The smoke is blocking all but the closer mountain.  Yesterday, about 3:30, this is what we saw: Sunday afternoon--New Fire East Glacier!  It is a new fire in East Glacier, the Thompson Creek Fire, which started about 3:30 Sunday, along Thompson Creek, about a mil

Fires a' Burning!

Today--storms over the fire   Currently in East Glacier/St. Mary, MT    54 Degrees High  66      Low 46   Radar Map this morning... Yea! Moisture on the East Glacier fire, and look! Even an icy mix up in the mountains! Yep! We have the fire place going! Makes it cozy! We celebrate the cool weather and the rain! We have been loving our time here in Glacier, in spite of the fire, which made its presence known when we first arrived! We had second thoughts about coming here. It was warm those first few days, so keeping the motorhome closed up with the AC running was a good thing, but going outside for any reason one "hit" that acrid smoke smell. Friday, July 31, on our way to East Glacier Monday, August 3 By Tuesday of this week the smoke lessened as the fire was being contained. We were glad we stuck it out, for the views from our site View out the dining room window are tremendous, and we have thoroughly enjoyed our explorations here,

Is Mother Nature Trying to Tell us Something....? Or is it Buffalo....?

Image
Currently in Columbus, MT (home of Montana Silversmiths!) High 93   Low  54   Currently 78 Cloudy, scattered thunderstorms tonight.... Deer Park Campground, Buffalo, WY 9/2014 Remember last September --our stay in Buffalo, WY...?  Well, something about us, perhaps that campground, and/or something else--we do not know! We have been throughout this trip watching the weather. Deer Park Campground, Buffalo, WY 7/2015 So during our stay at Buffalo things were looking A-OK.... Well, midnight Thursday (Friday morning?) we were rudely awakened by several loud crashes of thunder followed by lightening....then RAIN, with more thunder crashes and lightening flashes....! We checked the Power Control System, and yes, power was out....! The only difference between this visit and the one last September was the temperature! There was no snow this time! Oh, and the time was different....! We were okay with our battery/inverter system--no need to run the generator; as we kept check

Paying Attention to Weather Warnings!

Image
Currently at the Rafter Jar Bar Ranch 71 degrees, mostly cloudy  Low 57 80% chance of rain--thunderstorms during the evening We have had interesting weather this trip! We left Cape Girardeau, MO early to "get ahead" of a rain storm, only to have rain follow us, it seems, throughout our travels and stay in Illinois and on! We experienced our first tornado siren at the Sioux Falls KOA, about 1 AM, in the pouring down rain... We had been watching the severe weather approaching, so before we went to bed pulled in all but one of the slides, had our "to-go" bag out, and raincoats....so piled out of bed, gathered up the very sleepy dog, and followed the crowd to the nearest bathroom, even tho' we had read the park brochure which stated that the "reinforced steel pavilion was the structure to go to in a storm." We were just being good sheep! When the KOA Workkamper came down and announced that we should go to the steel reinforced structure, we joined the

This is the view out our "picture window" at the Rafter J Bar Mountain Resort. We are LOVING IT!! Rupert gives his bark of approval, for there is real grass, not the pokey stuff, where he can play soccer! Currently, near Hill City, SD, Cloudy, 72. High 77   Low 58 The altitude is approximately 5200 feet. And we are surrounded by trees, mountains, and lots of grass! What a great yard we have! We are enjoying the view, the quiet, and making use of the George S. Mickelson Trail, easily accessible from the park, unfortunately heading uphill as we travel south, but the grade is 4%, so very doable. And the return ride is ALL DOWNHILL! What fun! This is our third day here, out of 15--and we definitely will return for a longer stay! We will be posting more about the Mickelson trail , and our time here at the Rafter J! Our site is spacious, with fantastic views. Oh, and did we say how much we are enjoying it....? Here are pictures of our site and the view behind us.

9 Tornadoes Confirmed in Northern Illinois June 22, 2015

Image
Millbrook, IL Jellystone Park Currently 67  Cloudy    High 70  Low 57   Humidity 87%  Dew Point 63 We have been dodging severe storms:  rain, hail, thunder storms, since leaving Arizona mid April. Well, our dodging effectiveness continues, but this time it was plenty close! The Weather Channel described the storm as a super cell, spawning the 9 tornadoes. Based on this article from the Chicago Tribune , Lindy created the map below.  You can see the path, going south east, going south of the Riders. Click on the picture to make it larger. We had our phones and tablet out, each of us following the alerts we received on our phone from WeatherCall and Weather Channel Alerts. Lindy was tracking radar on the tablet, making it larger to make a better determination of location, confirming that each on-coming wave would not be a "direct hit".....  But that didn't make us feel any better! Doesn't a warning mean to take immediate shelter? The shelter here at the campgroun

EarthCaching, And the World's Only Inland Cape

Image
Chatham, IL  76    Low 70     Rain showers.... Cape Girardeau, Missouri, lots of history, great historic section of town, nice murals on the flood walls built to control flooding, and the world's only inland cape! Oh, and Andy's Custard, which we liked better than Culver's! (our humble opinion only...) There is much more--the above stands out from our recent brief visit. We were attracted to the historic part of town, the flood wall, and the murals painted on the flood wall. While there, Lindy discovered an EarthCache, Cape Girardeau Floods . (Create a log-in, it is  Sunday 6-14-15 free!). This type of cache is a challenge, as you have to find answers to a series of questions about a unique geological feature or aspect of the Earth from the area of the cache. This one was fun, if not a bit scary regarding the history of flooding of the Mississippi into the city. The day we were there, the river was at the "bottom" of flood stage, 32 feet. You can see
