Houghton, MI     6:45 PM EDT:  Currently 66   Considerable cloudiness, areas of patchy fog. Winds 10 to 15 MPH                             Of course one cannot leave this area without talking and sharing pictures of the many lighthouses along the shore. Technology has brought many changes, but still some of these old structures are maintained for the "heritage seekers" among us to seek out, to explore, to marvel and wonder about those times of old. This link  on " Digging the Keweenaw " will help explain why we enjoy this area so much! Eagle Harbor Lighthouse Eagle Harbor Lighthouse Sand Hills Lighthouse Inn The  Sand Hills Lighthouse Inn  is now a bed and breakfast lighthouse, and according to their web site, a fine one to visit!. This lighthouse is on the western side of the peninsula. We found another lighthouse on the eastern side which we understand, from Bob and Jo's blog, is another private one. What would it be like to live in a

Houghton, MI  Currently 58 - fog  Low tonight  54                        Tomorrow:  High 65  Low 55  Showers in the morning We created our own heritage sites along with those identified by Keweenaw National Historic Park. Remember we said that we felt like every place we went we found something historically significant. Isn't that true of any place any of us might travel? We certainly found that to be true with our four "experiences" discussed earlier, for heritage  is something inherited from the past, and we all have a past! So we are heritage seekers! On our excursion west on the canal road, where we ended up seeing the Ranger III enter the canal from Lake Superior we saw this old building. Another day we drove east on MI 26, to Lake Linden, then on county roads to the eastern shore of Lake Superior. A geocache led us to a World War II Memorial in Lake Linden, celebrating more local heritage. Driving on we found the small little town of Gay, rich with more

We are here thanks to Bob and Jo of   How to Love Where You Are and Eat Where the Locals Eat! They are the ones who gave us all the stacks of info on this great place, as we said earlier. If you follow their blog, they do have a special gift for finding excellent food spots, along with other great things to see and do while visiting a location. They discuss the Ranger III in this post , so we could not wait to see this ship! Coming through the Portage Lake Lift Bridge Its departure Tuesday morning, our first week here. So we were really excited to see it pass by the first time. Its return trip Wednesday afternoon, our first week here. This past Wednesday afternoon we decided to take a ride out the Canal Rd, just above the RV

In Houghton:  High today 65, low 50   Currently 62     Scattered thunderstorms next 3 days... Where we are...... View Larger Map We are in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, on the Keweenaw Peninsula. A canal, listed on some maps as the Portage River, dissects the Keweenaw Peninsula. There is only one way across this body of water, and that is over the Lift Bridge from Houghton into Hancock on US 41. We have spent our time here enjoying the City of Houghton RV Park, built right on the canal with tremendous views, and taking several side trips throughout the Keneewah Peninsula, but in no way have we "seen it all!" Houghton, MI goes into our files as a "place to return"...! The RV Park is nice..... Our site from the road--see the covered picnic area? Our site looking toward the road Looking west toward's neighbor's picnic area--sun set.... Sunset.... We saw a seaplane land--well, we didn't "s
