In and Around Houghton--Part 2: The Ranger III

Houghton, MI  Currently 60   High 64   Low 58   Showers     Showers/Scattered Thunderstorms next 5 days.....our last 5 days here....: (   : (   : (  .  But we got a bike ride in this morning before the rain started!

We are here thanks to Bob and Jo of  How to Love Where You Are and Eat Where the Locals Eat! They are the ones who gave us all the stacks of info on this great place, as we said earlier. If you follow their blog, they do have a special gift for finding excellent food spots, along with other great things to see and do while visiting a location. They discuss the Ranger III in this post, so we could not wait to see this ship!
Coming through the Portage Lake Lift Bridge

Its departure Tuesday morning, our first week here.

So we were really excited to see it pass by the first time.

Its return trip Wednesday afternoon, our first week here.

This past Wednesday afternoon we decided to take a ride out the Canal Rd, just above the RV Park that follows the canal out to Lake Superior. Once we were there, Mike had the brilliant idea to wait for the Ranger III, coming through the breakwater into the canal. It was a grand idea!  About 1:15 we saw the ship on the horizon.

We lost sight of the ship about 1:45 as it went around a bend so we walked around the shore opposite the state park, enjoying the views, then drove casually back to the RV Park. We had no idea how long it would take the ship to make it down the canal past us to the dock. But about 2:45 we heard the ship's horn, blasting its message to the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, so it takes about an hour to come down the canal fromt the Lake!

The Ranger III is an integral part of Isle Royale National Park, providing transportation and support to the unique, wilderness location only accessible by boat or seaplane.

We had a fun time seeing the sights along Canal Road, viewing the breakwater into Lake Superior, and watching the Ranger III enter the canal from the Lake and speed by us.

We are SWIRVIN around the Keweenah, enjoying the sights, sounds and eats!
