Change in Plans.....Exploring A Section of the Cascade Loop Scenic Highway
We were to be long gone from Valley Camp--but with all plans comes the need for change...and when Mike's dad fell down the back steps of his home early Sunday morning July 7; falling against a hand rail shattering his shoulder, we adjusted our plans! Surgery went very well, and he has been an excellent "student" in rehab, returning to his home in North Bend two weeks ago.
Thankfully, we can make necessary adjustments to our time, for that is what we are rich in: TIME! In this instance, time spent with family when needed is rich indeed! We have teased her dad--regarding his method in getting Mike to spend more time with him....!
We took a couple of day trips: to Leavenworth, stopping by Roslyn (featured in the TV show, Northern Exposure, several years ago....!) on the way; and then another a week later to Cashmere, the geographical center of Washington--exploring a little of the Cascade Loop Scenic Highway, and noting places where we WILL return to stay with the coach for further exploration!
This entry will focus on our first day trip; the Leavenworth/Roslyn adventure. We packed snacks, and lunch for us and the dogs' dinners. On a whim (it was not our intent to see Roslyn, but after several years of zipping past the exit on I-90, THIS time we exited! We found it very charming! We found the sights "familiar", from our dedication to the show Northern Exposure (1990-1995) including the Brick Tavern, the oldest operating tavern in Washington. We were the only car, other than local residents, "touring" the town! Very pleasant! We followed signs to Rest Rooms, and discovered a small park and a trail head on an old railroad bed that went up several miles. We noted the opportunity for excellent hiking and biking. Roslyn thus joined the list of many places to visit again!
This sign is hard to read, but it acknowledges the history of coal mining in the area. This is the Coal Miners' Memorial. Nicely done! Our focus, you remember, was to visit Leavenworth, which was still 70 miles, so we drove on; but putting Roslyn on our "return visit" list!
Leavenworth did not disappoint, crowned A&E's "Ultimate Holiday Town," and chosen by USA Today as a Top Ten Pick, we decided a fall visit would be grand, along with Christmas--but NOT in the
motorhome! We were there fairly early, before too many crowds, so after finding parking in shade, we walked up and down a few streets, taking turns visiting shops while the other sat with the Corgis.
We found the Riverfront Park, so headed that way. Lindy, with her Geocache phone app found a
geocache, so we hiked the trails in the park and found a geocache. We found the neatest little Ice Cream/Soda Shop and Antique Store on our walk back to the car! We were hot and tired, so we checked out the cool antiques and bought two sodas! It was noon, and after sharing soft pretzels followed by the sodas (I didn't tell you that we bought soft pretzels right away!), we weren't hungry, but were hot and tired so headed back to the car for further exploration.
Lindy had heard good reviews on Icicle River RV Resort, so we headed out west and south of town to check it out. The park has cabins and RV sites: 30 and 50 AMPs. Sites are tight, but we found that it would be good for big rigs such as ours. Later, a couple next to us at Valley Camp said that the sites on the hill, 110-114, were very nice. After looking at the KOA, we will use Icicle River RV Resort! We just need to make reservations! We will definitely return to this part of the Cascade Loop for further exploration in our coach!
We pulled off here to eat our sandwiches and feed the dogs. The cabin looks quite intriguing, don't you think? It would be fun to know the history.
The stop was a good one, walking the dogs up the road a ways, then we piled in for the rest of the journey back to Valley Camp.
Working on sharing our explorations in the Pacific Northwest!
Roving Riders--Soon to be Swirvin on down the road!
