We departed Spring, TX, just before severe thunder storms arrived, for Westlake LA on April 19. We spent one night at a very nice park north off of I-10, Whispering Meadows RV Park. Any of you readers familiar with love bugs...?! We ran into LOTS! And they were a pain to get off the front of the coach, especially the windshield!
On April 20th, we drove on to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, to Hollywood Casino RV Park for the weekend. Again, a very nice park, and we found Bay St. Louis a nice, small town. We even played the penny slots--Mike coming away with wins both times...Lindy playing for a while--some gain...then total loss! It was fun!
This small town (population 8,209) was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. As we drove around, we could see many empty lots, with driveways going nowhere....A quick look on pictures on line showed several before and after shots of beautiful homes, totally wiped away by the 28 foot storm surge. We found the area coming back strong, as the ads indicate--the new award winning bridge across the bay is beautiful! Bay St. Louis is a great example of small-town America; coming back stronger after disaster!
Monday, April 23, we drove on to just east of Pensacola, to Emerald Beach RV Park in Navarre, Fl. A very nice RV park right on Santa. Rosa Sound. Our RV site was not right on the beach, but we were near! Hard to believe that we are in Florida, near the beautiful beaches of Pensacola and Navarre, with white sand and waters of the Gulf that are really emerald! And we love the palm trees--different from those in Arizona!
We've driven the road on Santa Rosa Island to Fort Pickens--more battery installments similar to those of the Pacific North West, but with different histories and purposes! The most action at this historic site was during the Civil War. We were able to get more stamps on our National Park Passports, Fort Pickens, and Gulf Islands National Seashore, part of the National Park System. Such history! Such scenery! Grand experiences!
We drove over the bridge to the island, parked and rode our bikes on the path along Navarre Beach, which is part of the Florida National Scenic Trail. We did not ride to Pensacola Beach as the bike path was along the road, and was covered with sand. Below are some of our pictures of these grand experiences...We are enjoying our travels!
