Harpers Ferry National Historic Park

Image
While in Williamsport, MD, we visited Harpers Ferry National Park . The web site states:   A visit to this quaint, historic community, at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, is like stepping into the past.   That would be correct! We drove the streets, visited the information center, and explored one battlefield. We were once again transported back into time. John Brown's Fort:  (Armory Fire Enginehouse) S everal events, dates, and individuals comprise Harpers Ferry. The National Park Service has identified six themes that run through the town's history:  Industry, Natural heritage, Transportation, John Brown, Civil War, and African American History. Each of these interwoven themes are found here, providing a richness of experiences as one explores....   Battlefield area  Steps up the hill....Where do they go...? This was taken on the road out of the park to the visitor's center....no parking available to explore.... We wer...

Virginia--Appomattox, Shenandoah National Park, GRADUATION!

Image
We had a beautiful site at the Charlottesville KOA, and the weather was cool, for the most part. June 2, graduation day, was in the mid 70's with low humidity. We celebrated Nathan receiving his diploma--with all his honors (top 10% of his class!). We are all so very proud of him! We visited Appomattox Court House   (the name of the village), that served as the surrender site where Robert E. Lee surrendered his men to Ulysses S. Grant, April 9, 1865. This is a National Historic Park. We drove south from our camp site, on VA 20, along a Virginia Scenic By-Way, enjoying the drive. The park has been re-created, and we found it very informative! We shared our visit that day with a couple of bus loads of fifth graders. Interestingly, the hit of the day for the fifth graders seemed to be our two dogs....!  One of us would wait outside a building while the other held the dogs--and the fifth graders gathered around the dogs! This is the McLean House, where Lee...

Red-Shouldered Hawks in Connecticut

Image
To the right are the young hawks in the tree right out side our window at our site in Thomaston, CT. The owners said that there were two babies that hatched...so we are guessing that in this picture there are the two young ones not willing to fly just yet, along with a parent trying to encourage them to take off and fly! When we pulled out the next morning, we saw one still in the tree....either one had taken the plunge, or jumped to a branch of the tree out of our line of site! It was fun to watch! More later!

To Maine!

We are in Maine! Departed Minuteman Campground in Littleton (a very nice RV Park!), MA Tuesday, June 19, for Saco/Old Orchard Beach KOA. Trip was an easy 100 miles, so we took our time getting ready to depart--thus allowing for all traffic problems to be gone! Worked, sorta! It is pretty hard to go anywhere along the east coast, however, without lots of traffic. We are managing! We arrived at 1:30, and were set up at our site by 2. We are in trees, so are using park cable. We are enjoying the local news and information--gives a good "feel" for the area! Here is the map: View Larger Map We are working on catching up on our blogs, so stay tuned! Roving Riders--not roving for the next several days! "Talk" to you later!

Charlottesville to Littleton, MA

We are Swirvin On Down the Road:  Charlottesville, VA to Littleton, MA for four days, then on to Saco, Maine! We left Charlottesville ( A ) Sunday, June 10 for Williamsport, MD, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park,  ( B ). We were there 3 days where we visited Harper's Ferry on a beautiful warm day. We had planned to drive down to Antietam Battlefield the next day, but rain came that night and continued throughout the morning! We stayed "in!" June 13 we departed Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp for Lehigh Gorge Campground ( C ) in White Haven, PA--in the Poconos! We did not run the air conditioner! However, it took us over an hour to get level--and we never did..we ran down to the bedroom, had to hike uphill to the living room! In our rating system for parks:   A Keeper , If we Have to , and NO WAY . This park rated a NO WAY! The one factor was the cool air! And, we enjoyed traveling through this country! Tonight we are in Thomaston, CT, at a very nice park, Branch ...

On to Charlottesville VA!

View Larger Map May 29 we departed Statesville East KOA for Charlottesville KOA (we are building up our KOA Vaule points!). The campground is beautiful, however, it is a dead zone for Verizon! Hence our tardiness in posting! Nathan is graduated--top 10% of his class, we have geocached, drove the Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park and had a great visit with dear Friends! Oh! We also purchased a tablet--THANKS BOB AND JO for your influence! We are using campground's wi-fi to create this post We depart tomorrow and will work on catching up on posts. Later!
