"Check Engine Light....Low coolant level....."

Error messages demand attention. But for readers of our blog, you will recall our first experience with an error message, resulting in a mistake in the computer software....so we did ignore the first time "Coolant Level Low" came up, as we traveled from Polson down US 93 to I-90. And yes, we did notice a very slight rise in the engine temperature--a never before occurrence in our travels with this coach.

The second time the message appeared, Mike took it seriously. She found a shop with a Cummins engine
sign, and pulled off US 93 there. They were busy, but a tech did come out to the rig and noticed that a special coolant was required, one he did not have. He recommended a freightliner shop a couple of exits away on I-90, so off we went.

We pulled into I State Truck Center, Missoula, and met with Derick, a service advisor. He advised a two hour express assessment, and suggested we pile into the toad and enjoy lunch, etc. So we did--finding a Costco for shopping--we had discovered that we needed some items and had planned on doing so later--later became NOW! Then we found Murdochs! Our first Murdochs was in Polson, a home and ranch supply store, like Tractor Supply stores. It was at Murdochs that we were directed to look for a life jacket for Rupert. Yes, they had life jackets for dogs, but the only sizes they had left were small and extra-small. Rupert still received a dog treat, however, just like in Petsmart! We were looking for heavy duty quick links for our towing set up at Napa. They did not have it, but suggested we go to Murdochs and of course they had a wide selection of quick links! So Murdochs is now our new, favorite place to shop! We managed to kill lots of time looking in Murdochs in Missoula, in the air conditioning coolness, waiting on our coach.

After about an hour we drove back to I State just as the paperwork was being completed. The problem was real. Someone had put "straight water" into the radiator of our coach, then added some "green stuff", according to the tech. By the radiator is a large sticker spelling out the specific purple radiator coolant that must be used in our rig. Why anyone would put something other than the required is beyond us. We have our suspicions as to when this was done, but are not completely sure. I State drained the radiator, then added the proper coolant, "straight" was their word, followed by a 50-50 mix of water and the proper coolant.

We are glad it was quickly addressed, and that we had the time to wait for the necessary assessment and proper treatment. The rig did well driving the 70 miles on to Deer Lodge and yesterday the 150 miles from Deer Lodge to White Sulphur Springs. We continue to watch all systems, and will pay attention to any and ALL error beeps and messages!

Roving Riders, Safely SWIRVIN on down the road!
