Cruising Around Flathead Lake

Wildhorse Island seen through the trees
We enjoyed our four hour cruise on the waters of Flathead Lake in our rented, 20 foot in-board/out-board motor boat. But we wanted to see more of this gorgeous lake, so Tuesday, July 15, we drove from our RV park east and north around the lake on MT 35.  Our goals were simple:  pictures, particularly of Wild Horse Island, find some local cherries, and have fun! Of the several state parks along the lake we stopped at two:  one on the eastern shore then one almost directly opposite on the western shore. In
Eastern shore, Yellow Bay State Park
between these two state parks Lindy asked Mike to stop and Lindy snapped pictures, and we found cherries!
West Shore State park

We stopped and bought a bag of delicious bing cherries. Later, still on the eastern shore, we stopped at Bowman Orchards, just south of Bigfork. We left with delicious fudge (and of course, it was made with cherries), and two kinds of wine:  plum and cherry wine. This is the heart of Montana's sweet cherry orchards, which grow well around the lake as the lake modifies the temperatures during the cold winter months. We just missed the Cherry Festival in Polson, July 19 and 20, but we had fun, and are still having fun, on our own Cherry Festival!

We keep the bing cherries in the refrigerator, and they are tasty! A slice of that fudge with cherries melts in your mouth! Lindy has yet to break out the wine! More on that later!

Our stops at the two state parks provided opportunities to walk a bit, exploring the shoreline in more detail. Up near the "top" of the lake, is Bigfork, a great little town to visit. A great many people also found Bigfork a great little town to visit (we found where the tourists go)! Just like Leavenworth, WA! We found a place to eat with a patio, so Rupert could join us, then continued around the lake, to the western shore, and back to Eagle Nest RV Resort.

We will definitely return to Polson, to Flathead Lake, for further exploration and enjoyment.

  1. Cherries in Washington are good aren't they? Are there flathead cherries near you?

    1. Yes, cherries in Washington are good--interestingly, Bowman's website indicates that they also have land in Washington where they get cherries, in case of a freeze in the Flathead Valley (which happened in 1989). And yes, the cherries we bought were from the Flathead Lake area.
