Smokiam RV Resort, Soap Lake, WA
Soap Lake WA: High 98, Low 72--currently 98!
We are in the HOT once again! We are here for one night, and plan on taking off early in the morning, heading for Bonners Ferry, ID. We just might enjoy temperatures slightly lower...highs 90, and 86; lows 58 and 56! We shall take it!
Smokiam RV Resort looked nice from the highway--but it took us about 45 minutes to locate a suitable site! We were told by the office which sites were 50 AMP, and which were open. However, we found those supposedly "open" sites occupied! Plus these "pull-through" sites were NOT level, and they were side by side hookups. We finally chose a back in, which meant Mike would have to unhook the car. NOT a problem! We will NOT stay here again!
The history is interesting. Soap Lake is "soapy!" There are concentrations of minerals in the water, the most abundant mineral is a "washing soda". It is a meromictic lake, where two layers of mineral concentrations do not mix. There are only 11 such lakes in the US, and some say Soap Lake is likely the "most radial" of all. The name Soap Lake comes from the word "Smokiam", perhaps the Tsincayuse, or "Chief Moses People" tribe, a term which means "healing waters." Tribes used the lake for healing purposes for themselves and their animals many years before the area was settled by pioneers. Soap Lake, Smokiam, was considered a neutral area. NO fighting was allowed at the lake for any rival tribes as it was a place and time for healing.
We did not experience these proclaimed attributes of these waters. Perhaps another time we might!
The drive over Snoqualmie Pass on I-90 was pleasant--just lousy road! Construction is progressing well in the complete removal of the old snow shed and adding lanes. East of Ellensburg we realized that we have indeed left the coolness of the other side of the mountain! New adventure and experiences await!
We will be in Bonners Ferry for a couple of days, then on to Flathead Lake, MT for a week!
We shall explore US Highway 2 tomorrow into Spokane, then north and east into Idaho.
Roving Riders, On the Road Again!
SWIRVIN on down the road!

Every now and then you just run into a park that does not work.
