After Our Winter, On to Cody!

After Lindy checked the WYDOT website 257 times this morning--finally seeing that Level 1 Chains were no longer required, and that most of the way was dry--just a few spots were still listed as "slick"....we departed Deer Park RV Park in Buffalo about 10 AM for Cody, over US 16, passing over Powder River Pass at 9,666 feet.

It was sunny, but NOT warm! We cranked up the heat in the coach. The person driving had two things going for them: 1) the sun was shining in their window and 2) the vents are closer to the driver....! So let it be said that the cranking up of the heat was for the passenger! The driver simply pointed the vents away from them. We discovered that the coach is NOT designed for winter driving! We have got to stop RVing in the Winter!

The only problem we encountered was the slush on the roadway which wiped out both the coach and the jeep! Mike had so carefully washed the jeep while in Buffalo and had cleaned up the coach.....! Oh, the joys of driving through winter, while it is still summer, but really almost fall..... not really winter....yet winter....!

Driving today was not a problem at all. The coach handled the climb and descent well over the pass. The exhaust brake did a good job in keeping the coach rolling slowly down the long descent. It was just that danged slush on the road! We did see lots of snow on the mountains on the drive! This picture Lindy took as we were climbing up to the pass gives some indication of the snow...

Our drive today was 184 miles, and it took us about 5 hours, including stops. Ponderosa Campground in Cody is really nice! And we get satellite! Hard to believe with all the trees around! We are ready to enjoy our time here!

Notice the grime on the coach!

Car also pretty dirty!

We are in walking distance of many attractions in Cody. We have our explorations around Buffalo to share as well!

  1. Not sure if we would have taken that pass after all that snow.

    1. Road was well plowed and clear, just melting snow from the snow along the sides of the road. Road slush from passing cars and the motorhome throwing it up on the jeep made for a dirty coach and totally covered the jeep. We were ready to move on! Interestingly, there were two motorhomes from Deer Park that left when we did. We played tag all the way over the pass: we passed them when they pulled over, then we stopped and they passed us, they stopped again and we passed them.... They pulled into the Ponderosa just after we did here in Cody! Really was a beautiful day with the sun shining on the snow!
