Wyoming Wanderings....Wrapup

Our routes we took exploring ....

No, we were NOT drinking while wandering in Wyoming! We just found much to see and do, and you'll see that we still have more "ground" to cover! We did enjoy our meanderings in this state! We spent just under three weeks here, September 4 through the 24! Readers of this blog will recognize the necessity of the Riders visiting Forts:  Fort Bridger, Fort Reno, Fort Phil Kearney....! We geocached. We followed bits and pieces of the Bozeman Trail, and saw the ruts of the Oregon Trail, and LOTS of horses!

Bozeman Trail!

Of course we had to drive north from Buffalo to Fort Phil Kearny, then south to Fort Reno through Kaycee. From Kaycee, we headed  east and north again, returning to Buffalo. It was in Kaycee that we discovered a tribute to the 1976 World's Bareback Champion, Chris Ledoux, who, after achieving the Bareback Championship, retired from rodeo and pursued a second career in  the country music circuit. He had a ranch near Kaycee, hence the location of the tribute. We found horses as plentiful as cattle throughout our meanderings! Pronghorn were everywhere (interesting point of clarification - pronghorns are NOT antelope)! And you didn't just see a few--but usually at least a dozen, sometimes you would see several groups up on the hills, with each group numbering at least 12.

The Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody was terrific!

Five museums make up the Center:

  • Buffalo Bill Museum:  all about the spectacle he created and the west he loved
  • Cody Firearms Museum:  how firearms "shaped" the west...
  • Draper Natural History Museum:  our favorite!
  • Whitney Western Art Museum:  we enjoyed this one--a good follow-up of Charles Russell from our Montana visits, and Remington--and others who painted and paint the west

  • Plains Indian Museum:  good to expand our horizon beyond the Navajo and Pueblos of the Southwest

If you are ever in Cody, be sure to visit the Center! It is well worth the two days you get with your admission ticket!

From Cody we traveled to Dubois, via Yellowstone. From our campground near Dubois, we drove  to the Grand Teton National Park, enjoying the glorious colors and the beautiful day, covered in our previous blog. And have we told  you how much we liked the Longhorn Ranch RV Resort....?! We will be back--perhaps for a month or more....!

From Dubois, we drove down to Fort Bridger, in the south west corner of the state. Highway 28 travels over South Pass, the route of the Oregon Trail.. It was along here that we saw the ruts of that trail.

Fort Bridger RV Camp -- Rupert approved!
We took the drive down to Flaming Gorge, via I-80 to Green River, than south and west back to Fort Bridger.

We found a great park on the shore of the reservoir...
AND several pronghorn! 50 AMP and water, and a dump station!
We shall return with our rig!

The wonders of Wyoming really made us live up to our Swirvin handle as you can see. We swerved across this gorgeous state to experience and enjoy  its beauty and history.

Roving Riders, SWIRVIN on down the road into Utah, currently in Heber City, enjoying more fall colors in the mountains surrounding us!

Later!
